No relief yet! Heatwave conditions to continue across Odisha till May 26, says IMD

Odisha is set to continue experiencing intense heatwave conditions for at least the next five days. Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar forecasted no immediate relief from the prevailing summer spell.

Authorities issued a yellow warning for 15 districts as temperature is expected to rise further across several parts of the state.

Heatwave Conditions To Continue

From western Odisha to the coastal belt, residents are grappling with high temperatures and uncomfortable humidity levels. According to the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, the current heatwave conditions are likely to persist until May 26.

The weather office also indicated that temperature may increase by up to 2 degrees Celsius in the coming days, prolonging discomfort across the state.

Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre Director Manorama Mohanty said, “Heatwave, warm nights and humidity will continue for another five days across Odisha.”

Temperature Above Normal

The impact of the prevailing weather conditions was reflected in temperature readings recorded across the state on Wednesday.

Jharsuguda registered a maximum temperature above 45 degrees Celsius, while six other cities recorded temperatures exceeding 44 degrees Celsius. In addition, 22 cities reported temperature above the 40-degree mark.

The combination of extreme daytime heat and warm nights further intensified discomfort for residents in many districts.

Heat Dome Effect

Weather experts attributed the prolonged spell of extreme heat to the influence of a high-pressure zone, commonly referred to as a “heat dome”.

Environmentalist Jay Krushna Panigrahi explained the phenomenon, saying, “A high-pressure zone has been created. When the sunrays hit earth, water from the earth’s surface heats up and evaporates. As this vapor rises, it cools and condenses into clouds, and eventually falls back to the ground as rain when the droplets become too heavy to float.”

Experts noted that under the influence of the high-pressure system, heat generated by intense solar radiation remains trapped near the surface, restricting cloud formation and contributing to sustained temperature increases across the region.
