Bhubaneswar burns as temperature crosses 42°C mark

Odisha continued to reel under an intense heatwave as soaring temperatures and oppressive humidity made life increasingly difficult across the state on Thursday.
The extreme weather conditions have created a situation akin to ‘fire raining from the sky’, with residents struggling to cope with the relentless heat and discomfort.
According to temperature records till 2:30 PM on Thursday, Jharsuguda and Sambalpur emerged as the hottest places in the state, each recording a scorching 44.4 degrees Celsius. Hirakud closely followed with 44 degrees Celsius, while Bhubaneswar registered 42.2 degrees Celsius. Keonjhar recorded 40.8 degrees Celsius, and Rourkela reported 40.6 degrees Celsius.
The severe heatwave, accompanied by high humidity levels, has left people across Odisha distressed, with outdoor activities significantly affected. The harsh weather has disrupted normal life in many areas, forcing residents to limit movement during peak daytime hours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted no immediate relief from the prevailing heat conditions. As per the forecast, the state is unlikely to witness respite from the intense heat till May 26. Weather officials further warned that temperatures could rise by an additional two degrees Celsius over the next five days.
Western Odisha, in particular, is expected to continue experiencing severe heatwave conditions during this period. With temperatures remaining well above normal levels across many regions, the ongoing spell of extreme weather has considerably disrupted daily life and raised concerns over public health and safety.
