A sudden and powerful Nor’wester storm swept across parts of Odisha on Thursday, bringing both relief from the intense heatwave and tragedy in its wake. The severe weather event caused widespread disruption in Keonjhar district, where three people lost their lives, and another was critically injured after a tent structure collapsed due to strong gusty winds.

The incident was reported from Naranpur area under the impact of the sudden storm. According to reports, the Nor’wester, accompanied by high-speed winds and turbulent weather conditions, struck without warning and led to the collapse of a temporary tent setup. 

Several people were reportedly trapped under the debris, resulting in the death of three individuals on the spot. One more person sustained serious injuries and was immediately rushed to a nearby medical facility, where they are currently undergoing treatment.

Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, the Chief Minister directed that an ex-gratia assistance of Rs 4 lakh each be provided to the families of the deceased from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF). The CM also conveyed condolences to the families and assured all necessary support during this difficult time.

On the other hand, Jajpur district also experienced a contrasting impact of the same weather system. After days of severe heat and humidity, residents welcomed a brief spell of rainfall triggered by the Nor’wester. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and showers brought much-needed relief from the oppressive summer conditions that had been affecting daily life.
