Prime Minister Narendra Modi has brought Odisha’s rich artistic heritage into global focus during his visit to Norway by presenting traditional handicrafts from the state to the Norwegian royal family.

During the visit, the Prime Minister gifted a finely crafted silver sailboat model made in Cuttack’s renowned filigree (Tarakasi) art to Harald V. Known for its intricate silver filigree work and delicate craftsmanship, Tarakasi is one of Odisha’s most celebrated traditional art forms.

The centuries-old craft, practised mainly in Cuttack, involves creating ornamental designs using thin silver wires woven into detailed patterns. The exceptional artistry associated with Tarakasi has earned Cuttack the title of the ‘Silver City’ of Odisha. The handcrafted silver sailboat symbolised both Odisha’s artistic excellence and India’s cultural diplomacy.

The Prime Minister also presented a traditional Palm Leaf Pattachitra to Queen Sonja. Locally known as Tala Pattachitra, the ancient art form is regarded as one of Odisha’s oldest and most intricate traditions. The artwork features precise engravings on specially treated palm leaves and often depicts mythological stories, temple traditions and classical motifs.

Unlike cloth-based Pattachitra paintings, Tala Pattachitra is created by etching fine illustrations onto palm leaves and binding them together into foldable panels. The art form is widely admired for its detailed craftsmanship and unique storytelling style.

The Prime Minister’s choice of gifts has been seen as a major recognition of Odisha’s traditional crafts and the skill of its artisan communities. The gesture has further helped showcase the state’s cultural legacy and handcrafted excellence on the international stage.
