Open dumping of dead chickens triggers health concerns in Puri

A disturbing scene along the Chupurungi stretch of the Pipili-Kanas route in Puri district, Odisha, raised alarm among residents after heaps of dead chickens were found dumped along the roadside on Sunday.
The incident has sparked fears of a possible poultry disease outbreak, with locals suspecting a mass infection. Several dead broiler chickens were seen scattered in large numbers along the road, causing panic and unease. The carcasses were reportedly dumped in the open instead of being disposed of safely through burial or other proper methods, drawing sharp criticism from the community.
Residents have expressed serious concern over the apparent negligence toward public health and environmental safety. The decomposing chickens have spread a foul odor across the area, making travel difficult and causing inconvenience to nearby residents. The road is frequently used by people from five to seven panchayats for daily transportation, heightening fears that improper disposal could pose serious health and environmental risks.
Locals have strongly condemned the act, demanding an immediate investigation to identify those responsible. They have called for strict action, describing the incident as inhuman and irresponsible.
Meanwhile, the Block Veterinary Officer of Kanas stated that the chickens may have died due to the prevailing intense heat rather than a disease outbreak. However, officials have not ruled out other possibilities.
The veterinary department has assured that the matter will be examined thoroughly, and a proper investigation will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death and the circumstances surrounding the disposal of the birds.
