Kalabaisakhi wreaks havoc, lightning strike claims youth’s life in Odisha’s Gajapati

Severe Kalbaisakhi storms wreaked havoc in Odisha’s Mohana area in Gajapati district, causing widespread damage, disrupting electricity supply and claiming the life of a youth due to lightning strike on Saturday. Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorm lashed several parts of the region on Saturday evening.

According to local sources, strong winds uprooted trees in Dhepanaju village under Karachabadi panchayat, causing obstruction on roads and creating panic among residents. The storm also damaged electric poles in the area, leading to disruption of power supply in several nearby villages. Electricity restoration work is reportedly underway.

In another incident, three goats belonging to one Bikram Mallik of Randasing village under Dengesakhal panchayat died after being struck by lightning during the thunderstorm. Local residents said the sudden weather change and intense lightning activity created fear among villagers.

Meanwhile, a tragic incident was reported from Suluba village under Baghamari panchayat, where a youth died after being struck by lightning while playing cricket on Saturday evening. The identity of the deceased youth was yet to be officially confirmed at the time of reporting. The incident has left the village in shock and grief.

The thunderstorm activity also affected normal life in several areas of Mohana block, with intermittent rain and gusty winds continuing for some time. Local authorities have advised people to remain indoors during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under trees or venturing into open fields during lightning activity.
