Court helps elderly couple throw son and daughter-in-law out of house after years of abuse in Puri

Dayanidhi and Pramila Behera, an elderly couple from Narendra Kona area in Puri district, spent their entire lives raising their children with love and care. Dayanidhi, aged 83, ran a small slipper business to sustain the family, while also ensuring his two sons received education.

The couple nurtured, guided, and provided for their children, teaching them the value of responsibility, respect, and family bonds.

From Care to Cruelty

Tragically, in their old age, the same children turned away from their duties. The elderly couple was allegedly denied proper food, basic care, and respect. Instead, they were subjected to verbal abuse, humiliation, and neglect inside their own home.

“Our son beat us, denied us food, water, and money. For the past four years, he has even stopped the government allowance we were receiving. We used to get Rs 15,000 every month, but he stopped it. How are we supposed to survive now?” said a teary-eyed Pramila Behera.

“Our son abuses us. Whatever is destined for us will happen, but we never wanted a son like this,” added Dayanidhi Behera.

Neighbours’ attempts to mediate failed, leaving Dayanidhi and Pramila helpless and emotionally distressed. The situation, which had persisted for years, forced the couple to seek justice through legal channels.

Unable to tolerate this cruelty, in 2023, Dayanidhi and Pramila filed a written complaint in the Puri Sub-Divisional Magistrate Court. The court issued a warning to both sons and directed them to provide a monthly allowance of Rs 2,000 for the maintenance of their parents.

However, after a few months, the same issues resurfaced. In 2025, upon receiving fresh complaints, the case was reconsidered, and on February 7, 2026, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate Court passed a final verdict, ordering the eviction of the son and daughter-in-law from the house.

“Under the Maintenance and Welfare of Senior Citizens Act, if they feel injustice has been done, they can file an appeal within 60 days of the court order before the District Collector, who acts as the appellate authority,” explained Rajkishore Jena, Deputy Collector.

Justice Finally Served

After a prolonged legal battle spanning several years, the Puri Sub-Divisional Magistrate Court ruled in favour of the elderly couple. The court ordered the eviction of the son and daughter-in-law, and the district administration, in the presence of magistrates and police, ensured that the house was vacated immediately. Justice restored not only their home but also their dignity.

This case stands as a powerful reminder of the responsibilities children owe to their aging parents. Despite the cruelty they faced, Dayanidhi and Pramila’s courage to seek justice highlights the strength of human spirit and the importance of upholding respect, care, and love within families, even in the face of adversity.
