Kinnar community observes Savitri Brata with grandeur in Bhubaneswar

In a unique and heartwarming celebration of tradition and devotion, members of the Kinnar community observed Savitri Brata with great enthusiasm and religious fervour in Odisha. Dressed in traditional attire and following Hindu rituals, the community celebrated the sacred festival with grandeur near Palaspalli in the capital city of Bhubaneswar on Saturday.
The occasion witnessed Kinnar devotees adorning themselves in festive attire, wearing sindoor on their foreheads, shankha (traditional bangles) on their hands, and alta on their feet while dressing in new sarees and ornaments. The celebrations reflected deep faith and cultural values as members of the community came together to participate in the rituals associated with the auspicious observance.
According to members of the Kinnar community, they observe Savitri Brata primarily for the well-being and long life of their gurus, who hold a significant and respected position in their social and cultural structure. In the Kinnar tradition, gurus are considered guiding figures and parental symbols, making the observance emotionally and spiritually meaningful.
The grand celebration was organised by the Odisha Kinnar Akhada near Palaspalli, where rituals were performed in accordance with Hindu customs and traditions. The event highlighted not only devotion but also the community’s efforts to preserve and actively participate in age-old cultural practices.
Speaking on the occasion, members of the Kinnar community stated that their prayers extend beyond their gurus. They expressed that they pray for the long life, health, and prosperity of all men in society, reflecting a message of inclusiveness, compassion, and universal well-being.
The celebration stood as a symbol of faith transcending social boundaries and showcased the Kinnar community’s active participation in Odisha’s cultural and religious traditions.
“Kinnar community respects womanhood. We generally observe Savitri Brata primarily for the well-being and long life of our gurus. However, we are praying for the long life, health, and prosperity of all men in society this time, reflecting a message of inclusiveness, compassion, and universal well-being,” said Meera.
