Devotional fervour at Puri Jagannath Temple on Sabitri Amavasya; ‘Bhitara Chandan Yatra’ underway

Special rituals are being conducted at Puri Srimandir on the occasion of Sabitri Amavasya on Saturday. Married women are offering prayers for the long life and well-being of their husbands.

The rituals at the Sabitri temple are being performed in a spiritual atmosphere since early morning. Married women are visiting the temple and performing puja with fruits, conch bangles and vermillion as part of the traditional observance associated with Sabitri Amavasya.

Jala Krida Ritual Observed Inside Srimandir

Meanwhile, the traditional Jala Krida ritual will be held on the occasion of Amavasya tithi as part of the Bhitara Chandan Yatra rituals inside Srimandir.

The Chalanti Pratima of the deities participate in the Jala Krida ritual on Jyestha Krushna Ekadashi, Jyestha Shukla Ekadashi, Sabitri Amavasya and Shitala Sashthi. The ritual is observed at the Jala Krida Mandap situated inside the inner enclosure of Srimandir.

As part of the rituals, after completion of the Diba Alata Lagi and Chandan Lagi rituals, and following the Dakhini Ghara Bhoga ritual, Madanmohan proceeded to the Ratna Singhasan.

Thereafter, Lord Madanmohan and Goddess Sridevi received the Agyanmala and proceed to the Jala Krida Mandap, where Mahajana servitors ceremonially place the idols into the water tank, while Mudirasta servitors offer prasad.

Traditional Rituals Performed During Ceremony

After scented sandalwood water is sprinkled, rituals including Sitala Bhoga, Srianga Pocha and Mailama are performed. The idols are then adorned in Besha decorated with Malaphula or flower garlands.

Following completion of the Jala Krida ritual, Sridevi returns to the Ratna Singhasan for further rituals, while Madanmohan proceeds to the Dakhini Ghara.
