Indian Railways sounds Nationwide alert; passengers asked to report suspicious activity

Amid growing concerns over recent incidents targeting railway infrastructure and passenger safety, the Ministry of Railways has launched a nationwide security push, urging passengers to remain alert and immediately report any suspicious activity through Railway helpline number 139.
The warning comes after multiple incidents across the country, including recent fire-related cases, where preliminary investigations reportedly pointed towards the involvement of anti-social elements. Taking the matter seriously, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw chaired a high-level security review meeting at Rail Bhawan in New Delhi with senior Railway Board officials and field officers from across India.
Focus Shifts From Reactive Policing To Preventive Surveillance
The latest review signals a strategic shift in the Railways’ security approach — from merely responding to incidents to proactively detecting threats before they escalate. Indian Railways is now aggressively deploying modern surveillance technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based monitoring systems, drones, CCTV networks and upgraded cyber-security infrastructure to strengthen security across stations, trains and railway tracks.
According to officials, intelligence gathering at the grassroots level of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) is also being intensified in “mission mode”. The emphasis is now on faster field-level reporting, quicker analysis of inputs and seamless coordination between central headquarters and local railway zones.
Railway authorities believe technology-backed surveillance can play a crucial role in identifying suspicious movement, abandoned objects, sabotage attempts and coordinated anti-social activities much earlier than conventional methods.
Passenger Vigilance Now a Key Part of Railway Security
What makes this latest advisory significant is the Railways’ direct appeal to passengers to become active participants in the security ecosystem.
Officials acknowledged during the review meeting that several major mishaps were prevented in recent weeks because of timely intervention and quick response by railway staff. However, with India operating one of the world’s largest rail networks — carrying millions of passengers daily — authorities believe public vigilance is equally critical.
Passengers have now been specifically urged to:
Stay alert during travel and while waiting at railway stations
Report unattended baggage, suspicious persons or unusual activity
Immediately call Railway helpline number 139 if anything appears abnormal
Cooperate with RPF personnel during inspections and security checks
Railway officials stressed that even minor information from passengers could help prevent larger incidents.
Why The Concern Has Intensified
Though the Railways did not disclose detailed specifics of the recent incidents, officials admitted that initial investigations into some fire cases and operational disruptions suggested possible involvement of anti-social elements.
This comes at a time when Indian Railways is undergoing rapid infrastructure expansion, high-speed corridor development and station modernisation projects. Security agencies are increasingly viewing railway networks as vulnerable public infrastructure requiring stronger protection mechanisms.
The ministry’s latest review also highlighted concerns related to:
Sabotage attempts
Trespassing and vandalism
Theft and organised criminal activities
Cyber threats targeting railway operations
Crowd management and station security
AI Surveillance & Expanded CCTV Network Planned
One of the major takeaways from the meeting was the push towards AI-enabled surveillance systems. Railways plans to expand CCTV coverage significantly and upgrade existing camera systems with better image quality and analytics capability.
AI-assisted systems may help authorities:
Detect suspicious behaviour patterns
Monitor crowd movement
Identify unattended objects
Track entry into restricted areas
Improve incident response time
Drones are also expected to be used more extensively for track monitoring, surveillance of vulnerable zones and inspection of remote railway stretches.
Coordination Between RPF & GRP To Be Strengthened
The meeting further stressed the importance of better coordination between the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP), which often function under different administrative structures.
Officials discussed creating stronger information-sharing systems to improve response efficiency and intelligence flow across states and railway zones.
Ministers of State for Railways V. Somanna and Ravneet Singh Bittu were also present during the review meeting, along with the Chairman of the Railway Board.
Security Becoming Central To Railway Modernisation
The latest developments underline how security is becoming a central pillar of India’s railway modernisation strategy. As passenger traffic continues to rise and railway infrastructure expands rapidly, authorities are now attempting to integrate technology, intelligence and public participation into a unified security framework.
For millions of passengers travelling daily across India, the Railways’ message is now clear: vigilance is no longer only the responsibility of security forces — passengers too are expected to play a crucial role in safeguarding the nation’s railway network.
