Questions raised over Puintala police role in alleged PDS rice smuggling case in Odisha

Fresh questions surfaced over the role of Puintala police after allegations emerged regarding the handling of a truck allegedly involved in transportation of PDS rice from Bolangir district in Odisha to Raipur.

The controversy came days after the police had faced criticism over allegations of releasing a truck loaded with illegally transported sand. This time, concerns were raised over the alleged handling of a rice-laden truck and pickup vehicle that were detained by police.

Police Seized Vehicles

According to the FIR copy filed by police, information was received on May 9 regarding alleged smuggling of PDS rice from Ainlasari village to Raipur through a truck and a pickup vehicle.

Police subsequently seized both vehicles. Reports stated that the truck was carrying 26.4 tonnes of rice, while the pickup vehicle was carrying 2.4 tonnes.

However, questions are now being raised over why the police allegedly did not inform the Supply Department despite reportedly being aware that PDS rice was allegedly being transported illegally.

Allegations also surfaced that no case was registered against either the truck owner or the pickup vehicle owner so far.

Rice Trader’s Name Surfaces

When questioned, truck owner Sunil Mittal reportedly stated that his vehicle was hired by Kantabanji-based rice trader Ashish Agrawal.

However, allegations surfaced that police did not register any case against Ashish Agrawal either.

Instead, police reportedly identified Niranjan Khutuli of Ainlasari village as the owner of the rice consignment.

Ashish Agrawal is reportedly known in the area in connection with alleged illegal rice trade activities. Discussions were also underway locally over allegations of a possible black deal involving police and persons linked to the transportation of the rice.
