Fuel crisis hits Odisha, nearly 2,000 private buses stay off roads

Bus services across Odisha have been severely affected due to the ongoing fuel crisis, with nearly 2,000 private buses reportedly going off the roads across the state. According to the Private Bus Owners’ Association, around 14,000 private buses operate in Odisha, but services have been disrupted in several districts because of the non-availability of fuel at petrol pumps.
As a result, bus movement to many rural and interior areas has come to a halt, causing inconvenience to daily commuters and passengers.
The association cautioned that if the situation continues, bus operations across the state may come to a complete standstill in the coming days. Several bus owners have expressed concern over mounting operational difficulties due to the shortage of diesel and petrol.
The Private Bus Owners’ Association has urged the state government to intervene immediately and ensure adequate fuel supply to restore normal transportation services. The association further cautioned that the situation could worsen if prompt steps are not taken by the government to address the crisis.
Meanwhile, the Odisha government is likely to introduce major measures regarding the use of petrol and diesel. Indications emerged that restrictions could be imposed on government vehicle usage and public transport may be encouraged on a mandatory basis.
